The Chatbot Finished Their Sentences. It Couldn’t Finish Their Thinking.

Doctoral students in China described how fluent AI answers can feel like your own understanding — and what checking it looked like.

Thirty-two doctoral students were interviewed for the study, four in pilot interviews that were not included in the formal analysis, leaving a formal sample of 28 from six Chinese research universities. They described using chatbots for demanding research tasks such as reading dense literature, choosing methods, building frameworks and writing a thesis. Researchers asked them to walk through what happened when they leaned on AI to think.
