weeklyAI, 16 October 2026. The first of a weekly piece from my desk: what the news brought you, what it should have brought you, and what the week's studies open.
In 1844 Samuel Morse sent the first message over a telegraph wire, and within a few years the breakfast tables of America were set with news from places no one at the table would ever see: a fire in a distant city, still warm, with no bucket beside it; a crop lost in a county nobody could find on a map; a speech given to a hall the reader would never enter. The wire has not come down since. This week it brought a lawsuit by eight states against the company that makes ChatGPT, a border that China drew around its most powerful programs, and a day on which the Nasdaq fell more than two percent over the money borrowed to build these machines. All three arrived well reported. I read them the way a reader of 1850 learned to read the wire, with two questions: what has this to do with me, and what could I do about it if it did.
